Some works are taxed at different rates, even when you sell them together. In Germany, for example, paintings can be taxed at 7% and photographs at 19%. You can give each item on an invoice its own tax rate, so you don't need to split the sale into separate invoices.
Before you start
Your invoice's tax needs to be set as a percentage, not a fixed amount.
The item needs to be marked Taxed. You'll find this checkbox in the item's editor.
To set the invoice's own rate, go to the Edit step and use Add Tax Line. Choose a rate and a label. Your saved rates come from Settings > Transactions. For help finding them, see Where to Find the Transaction Settings. To start a new invoice, see How to make a new invoice.
Set a tax rate for one item
Open your invoice and go to the Edit step.
Under Items, click the pencil icon on the work's row.
In the item's editor, find Item tax rate. The Tax rate (%) field shows the invoice's rate as a hint, for example "Invoice rate: 7%".
Type the rate for this item. For example, type 19.
Click Save on the item's row.
Repeat for any other item that needs a different rate.
Once saved, the item shows its tax amount and its rate under its price. The summary on the right splits the tax into a total for each rate, using your invoice's tax label. For example, you might see "VAT (7%) €4,340.00" and "VAT (19%) €912.00".
A few things to know:
Leave Tax rate (%) blank and the item uses the invoice's rate.
Enter 0 for no tax on that item.
The rate is applied to the item's price after any item discount.
What your client sees
Click the View step to preview the invoice. Each line shows its rate and tax, for example "VAT (19%) €912.00". The totals show a line for each rate above the Grand Total.
Your client sees the same thing on the invoice they receive, and the downloaded PDF matches.
❓FAQs
Q: Why can't I see the Item tax rate field?
A: The field only shows when your invoice's tax is set as a percentage and the item is marked Taxed. If the invoice's tax is set to an amount, you'll see a short note instead.
Q: What happens if I leave the field blank?
A: The item uses the invoice's rate. Enter 0 if you want no tax on that item.
Q: Will I lose my item rates if I switch the invoice tax to an amount and back?
A: No. The item rates you set are kept.
Q: Can I set additional tax for each item?
A: No. Additional tax is still set once for the whole invoice.
